WWA Wildlife Report - February 2000

The spring flowers bloomed this month - white and purple violets in the shady place. Kingcups, primroses, snowdrop and daffodils around the site.

Oscar (male swan) sailed about the mere in a proprietorial manner (and begged for food from visitors). Mid Feb a thrush was heard singing territory - we haven't had a regular thrush around for a long time and they are in decline nationally. Many more small birds about and vocal.

Mammal sightings in abundance this month - the Muntjac has been seen around the site, 3 forms have been found where the Muntjac has been lying up in the rough grass meadows and she has been munching on the leaves of the violets. A water vole was spotted under the bridge by the mere.
